Be the Light, Not the Shade

It’s easy to throw shade. Gossip, side comments, and negativity often spread faster than kindness does. But here’s the truth: shade might get attention, but light leaves a lasting impact.

Being the light means choosing to lift others up instead of tearing them down. It’s congratulating a friend when they succeed, even if you wish it was you. It’s complimenting someone’s outfit in the hallway instead of silently judging. It’s being honest and real, without being cruel.

Shade can feel powerful in the moment—it might even make you feel “in control.” But in reality, it only dims your own shine. Light, on the other hand, builds confidence in you and those around you. It makes people want to be near you because your energy feels safe, genuine, and inspiring.

We all have moments where we’re tempted to be shady, especially when comparison creeps in. But the challenge is to pause and ask: Am I spreading light, or am I spreading shade? That little self-check can shift everything.

When you choose the light, you’re not only creating a better space for others—you’re building a brighter version of yourself. People may not remember every word you said, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel.

So next time the opportunity arises, choose to shine. Be the encourager. Be the cheerleader. Be the light, not the shade.
